Instructional Design Impact and Concept Development!

Part I
How does instructional design impact P-12 student learning?

Instructional design is all about precise planning, methods, and ideas. It is all about working and putting things in order. The most important thing for an educator is the outcome of the lesson that was just taught. It is just like doing anything in your life, the outcome is what we deem as important.  When it comes to instructional design, there should be clear goals stated before the approach is made with students. In my opinion, when objectives and goals are clearly stated in the beginning, it can help the process. A student that is impacted by instructional design has been equipped with a new skill and is learning how to use this skill in everyday life.

If students are given opportunities to have activities that improve critical thinking during discussions, it can impact their future endeavors in the classroom. This type of impact is getting them ready for careers and real-life situations. As teachers, we must understand that we have different learning styles in our classroom. Instructional design gives students an effective way of seeing outside the box. Unfortunately, I have only experienced this type of teaching a couple of times while being a student teacher. Instructional design can impact students, but it takes understanding of students’ specific needs while in the classroom. For this instruction to work properly we must spend time looking and searching for activities that are appropriate for the different needs of our classroom. The impact of instructional design must first start with educators understanding the design itself before teaching it.

Tools to Use with Concept Development!

Wordle

Wordle is a generator that makes “word clouds” from your own text. The words that acquire more frequently in your text would stand out more than other words. I think it is an awesome tool because you can put different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The wordle application would require just basic knowledge of typing, and the copying and paste feature on the computer.  The application is simple and anyone with basic computer skills would be able to use it, even your young students. This application can be also called a text cloud, or a tag cloud. These descriptions are alike because they give a visual illustration of a group of words. When comes to concept development, a word cloud can help students compare with others. Teachers can use word clouds so that students can relate with other students to help label and regroup terms.

Kidspiration

Kidspiration is an application that is used for developing literacy and numeracy skills by using visual learning. Kidspiration strengthens reading and writing skills, word recognition, vocabulary, comprehension, and expression of writing skills. The students can enhance their creativity with words, pictures, or numbers. This application is good when it comes to concept development because it helps students easily list their ideas that is related to a concept. They can make groups, list, and graphic organizers their own way. The lists are easy and editable for students that want to change something. This application is a concept-mapping tool.

Comments

  1. I noticed that the Concept Development Model and the Concept Attainment Model shared many similarities. They both tried to develop students' understanding, so that they were able to draw relationships between concepts. They also both worked to access student prior knowledge. I like to use the Concept Development Model when introducing a new unit of study to my students. This allows them to build upon their knowledge and is so helpful in allowing me to see who has a background in the content and who does not.

Kidspiration was suggested for the Concept Attainment Model also, however, you have to purchase a license. I found an application called Coggle that is a free concept-mapping tool. It is not as kid-friendly as Kidspiration and does not come with as many of the features, but if you are not able purchase Kidspiration or your school does not have access to this tool, then Coggle could be a free alternative. I think students would find Kidspiration easier to use than Coggle.
